GREAT CAESAR’S GHOST! %#%*#$* (and Other Everyday Conversation) in Ancient Rome. [Koffee Klatch Host: Ian M. Evans] This small group discussion will explore the challenge of writing authentic dialogue in an historical period for which we have little understanding of how ordinary people talked to each other. How might we deal with blasphemy, profanity and the everyday vernacular of the citizens of the later Roman Empire, with its hundreds of different nationalities and languages? Ian will first offer examples of the issues he confronted when setting his latest novel in Roman Wales, and then invite open critique and discussion of others’ thoughts about this topic.
